I love to run. I know not everyone does, but for me hitting the trails makes me feel alive.
As a run coach I've helped many people get into running, or get back into it in their 30's & 40's. My approach is very simple: "Run until you can't, walk until you can". Believe it or not running should be enjoyable! My simple strategy for beginners is to run until you're no longer enjoying it - which could be a kilometre, a block or 10 steps - then walk until you feel like you can run again. That's basically the starting point. I used this approach myself to get running again after a few frustrating years of back & leg issues.
My run clients do specific strength training aimed at building up their bodies to handle the rigours of running. What is interesting is how this training translates into them being better in so many different areas of their lives! So often back pain reduces significantly & things that used to be a problem are now easy. And of course their running goes from a run/walk model to specific individual training plans.
